To my son who’s 24 today and 2.898 miles away.  I miss him and now I’ve gone and made myself weepy dammit.

I don’t want to be played for a fool here.  I desperately want to think that this country can be what it should be. I don’t say  “could be like it once was” because I think that the way it used to be might have been wishful remembering.  That was a time before we all weren’t jaded by the easily obtainable truth.  You only believed what you heard and what you heard was only from one or maybe two sources, not the hundreds of thousands we have nowadays.  Oh, and if you think that the single sources back then were pure and non-biased, well you’re stupid.  Nearly everyone has their own agenda and wants to further their own beliefs and causes.  It’s human to do so.  So whether it was as pure and good then as we “remember” it to be remains to be seen, likely it never will.

But I have in my bleeding heart liberal mind a vision of what I want this country to be.  I’m not so stupid as to believe that it can be this way, but it would be nice if it were a little bit more.  I want us to be responsible, to take care of those who need taking care of, to hold our national hands outstretched with whatever others might need.  To take care of those who need to be taken care of and to be responsible and fair in our own dealings.

I am nearing saturation point and need for this election to be over.  I almost feel as if it just needs to be done with so that we can begin the process of learning we were duped again.  Please let me be wrong this time, please let my pessimism (which is tempered by experience) be wrong and we really do begin a change, a renaissance of national renewal, an uplifting of America in the eyes of the world.

And an uplifting of her own citizens who have been torn down in the last eight years.

1.  Are airplane seats getting shorter?  Is the distance between the edge of her seat getting shorter or are her legs elongating like some sort of weird scifi bug?

2.  Why can a person fly nonstop from Oregon to Tokyo, yet cannot seem to get from Raleigh to Portland in less than 100 hours with fifteen layovers?  Or vice-versa.

3.  Why does it cost the same for a round way ticket with one layover or three?  Do airlines think people WANT to take-off and land, take-off and land, take-off and land?

4.  Why does the west coast have to be on the other side of the country?

“Switch on the power, shoot with the gun, and hit the aim, then it can automatically read the target rings, when turntable stops running, music appears.”

(Music appears! Out of thin air! You can see it with your own eyes! Wow!)

“After awhile the turntable goes on running and a beautiful song sends out.”

(So much of this sentence is like a grammatical fingernail on the chalkboard of the english language. Oh wait, it’s NOT english. It’s Engrish. Toys made in China, with translations in Engrish.)

“Will revolve.” (Great. Sounds festive)

The hat will move up and down with ear. There is music.” (Move up and down “with ear”? An implication that however bizarre it seems, the ear (only one?) is going to move up and down taking with it the hat. And there again is the music. Will it simply appear or will it be sent out?)

“The infrared ray of the gun aims at the nose.” (Shoot him! In the face!)

“The eye will be.” (It will simply BE. An eye. Nothing more, nothing less.)

“The mouth will move.” (How ghastly)

“Send out the laughter at the same time and light.” (Send the laughter out into the ether, send out the white light - beams of white light and laughter. Both of them. At the same time. Sent out from your very own revolving Mickey Mouse head, which should be shot directly into the middle of the face!)

Now if you go ahead and reformat those sentences they seem like the most beautiful of poems:

Will revolve.

The hat will move up and down with ear. There is music.

The infrared ray of the gun aims at the nose.

The eye will be.

The mouth will move.

Send out the laughter at the same time and light.

Civil disobedience, that’s not our problem. Our problem is that people are obedient all over the world in the face of poverty and starvation and stupidity, and war, and cruelty.
